What’s the Deal with Standing Desks?
Recently patients have been asking me whether standing desks are worth it? Are they really as beneficial as news articles claim?
My response, “yes!” And here is why:
- Sitting too much has been linked to negative health outcomes (like obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.). Being able to break up the day by standing for periods of time therefore lowers your risk towards these ill effects.
- Standing reduces the chance of pain related to poor posture that you experience while seated (i.e., neck, shoulder and back pain).
- Blood sugar levels have been shown to return to normal levels faster on days a person spends more time standing, than they do when they sit. Maintaining blood sugar levels helps to reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
- Studies have shown that standing while working can decrease levels of stress and fatigue, while improving mood and energy levels.
- It may boost productivity due to the fact that it improves a persons mood and energy levels.
Keep in mind though, that any extreme change in the way we do things can come with side effects. If you suddenly go from sitting all day to standing, you may risk developing leg, back or foot pain.
The best thing to do is gradually make the change over time. I often recommend setting up a timer on your phone for 30-60 minute increments, to remind you to switch between positions. Over time you will find your endurance to stand will increase and before you know it you will be standing all day with no painful side effects. And your health and mood will benefit too!
